The elderly can be the most vulnerable to care giver corruption and fraud. Recently, a few family members came into my office to discuss their concerns regarding their mother’s infirmity and financial status. The family members were worried that their mother was unaware of her bounty and showing signs of dementia. The two oldest daughters reviewed their mother’s bank ledger to ensure her account was balanced. While on a 15-day trip to Europe, one of the daughters observed that there were four (4) checks missing from the mother’s account.
What Happened to the Elderly Mother’s Account?
The caregiver stole 4 checks from the bottom of the checkbook and wiped out her bank account. Checks were written and cashed in directly with the bank. When the elderly mother went to withdraw her monthly money, her account had been emptied out.
